The Ultimate Guide to Applying Concrete Block Paving Products

Why are so many people choosing concrete block paving?

Fashions change over the years and the popularity of different kinds of patios and driveways are no exception. One that has stood the test of time and stayed a favourite is concrete block paving. The reason? Well, they’re sturdy, durable, allow drainage to prevent standing water, are easy to clean and come in a huge range of colours and styles.

The Ultimate Guide to Applying Concrete Block Paving Products

When it comes to paving products however some people (especially first time DIYers) become overwhelmed by the number of different products available and their uses – so we’ve compiled a short list that we feel might help – referencing products from one of the most trusted brands out there – Resiblock.

What is sand stabiliser?

This product does exactly what it says on the tin, it stabilises the sand used to fill in between pavers. A good example for this is a product such as Resiblock 22 – this is a SPPU (Specialist Pre-Polymer Urethane) which you work into your paving by simply squeegeeing the material into the joints. By stabilising the sand with a product such as this your paving is more effectively anchored together and the sand is protected from erosion from rain, power-washing etc.

What is paving sealer?

Paving sealer is applied after the installation of your concrete block paving rather than during. It is a way to protect your paving blocks from becoming damaged by everyday wear and tear from vehicles, the growth of mosses and weeds, and the weather. Sealers also can protect against staining from things such as oil – which while not damaging your blocks, can definitely make a negative impact on their appearance.

Are there eco-friendly options?

The simple answer to this one is yes! More and more people nowadays are looking to lower their footprint and use products that are not going to harm the environment. Many companies are thankfully listening to their customers and releasing products such as Resiblock’s Patioseal Environmental which while still protecting paving blocks from erosion and weathering contain no solvents, making it more planet-friendly than the alternatives.

Which to choose – Matt or Gloss?

The choices here are almost entirely cosmetic, both Resiblock Superior Natural Matt and Gloss are long lasting sealers which protect against debris, stains, and spillages and both require two coats application on a dry surface which has been swept clean to ensure the best adhesion and coverage. A matt finish is often used for patios where a more natural, traditional feel is the goal, whilst gloss gives a decidedly more modern ‘wet’ look. Another reason we’re featuring Resiblock here is that they’re the only product that we’ve seen so far with a no oil-stains guarantee which is especially useful when used for driveways and the like.
