The last thing anyone wants is for a lineman to get injured on the job. Not only are these workers putting their lives on the line every day, but they’re also responsible for keeping the power running to our homes and businesses. According to the National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, out of every 100,000 powerline workers, 2,400 suffer serious injuries every year.

If you are a lineman, or you know someone who is, here are some tips to help them stay safe while working:

Before Going to Work

Always Wear the Proper Safety Gear

This includes gloves, hard hats, and face shields. It’s also important to wear the right clothing. Long sleeves and pants made from a non-conductive material will help protect you from electrical shocks. Don’t forget to put on the lineman boots as well. These should have rubber soles to insulate against electricity and provide good traction.

Do a Safety Check of Your Equipment

Inspect your tools and make sure they are in good working condition. Check your ladders for any damage, and inspect your harnesses and ropes to make sure they are not frayed or worn.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings and the Weather

Before you start working, take a few minutes to survey the area and familiarize yourself with the area. Identify any potential hazards. This includes things like low-hanging wires, trees, and power lines. Clear the area of any debris that could be blown around by the wind and create a safety hazard. If it’s been raining or snowing, be extra careful. Wet conditions can increase the risk of electrical shocks. Report any unsafe conditions to your supervisor.  It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Have a Plan

It’s always good to have a plan in mind before you begin work. This will help you stay focused and avoid any inconveniences and potential hazards.

Take Your Time

Rushing can lead to mistakes. If you feel rushed or pressured, take a step back and assess the situation. It’s better to take your time and do the job right.

While on the Site

Stay Alert

Working with electricity is dangerous, so it’s important to stay focused and be aware of your surroundings. If you’re feeling tired, take a break.

Follow All Safety Procedures

Don’t take shortcuts. Follow all safety procedures to the letter. This includes using the proper safety gear, following the right steps, and taking the time to do the job right. If you’re not sure about something, ask your supervisor.

Work with a Partner

It’s always a good idea to have someone working with you. This way, if something happens, there’s someone there to help. Your partner can also act as a lookout for any potential hazards.

Be Cautious When Working Around Live Wires

If you must work around live wires, always use the proper safety gear and follow all safety procedures. Keep your body in a safe position to avoid electrical shocks. Make sure you’re standing on a dry, non-conductive surface, and avoid touching anything with your hands or arms.

Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks As Needed

Working in hot weather can be dangerous. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids and take breaks often to stay cool and avoid heat exhaustion.
